Here’s something we want homeowners to know before it happens: your ceiling may look worse right after removal than it did before. This is completely normal, and it’s not a sign anything went wrong.
Popcorn texture was originally applied to hide imperfections. Once it’s gone, you’ll often find nail pops and small cracks that were buried for years, uneven drywall joints or seams, and patchy areas where old repairs were made. Once repairs are complete, you’ll decide on the finish. Two main directions:
A skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound applied across the entire surface, then sanded smooth before painting. It creates that clean, contemporary look common in modern homes. It requires more time and labour, but the result is genuinely striking.
If you prefer something less labour-intensive, or if the ceiling has minor imperfections that are difficult to fully eliminate, a light texture like knockdown or orange peel is a practical and attractive option. It blends naturally and holds up well over time.

Primer isn’t optional on a freshly repaired ceiling. It seals the repairs, evens out surface absorption, and prevents the patchy, flat look that comes from painting directly over joint compound.
From there, two coats of ceiling paint bring everything together. Ceiling paint is specifically formulated to reduce drips and provide even, consistent coverage when applied overhead.
