How to Minimize Dust During Interior Painting Projects

At Dunbar Painting®, we know that a fresh coat of paint can make you fall in love with your home all over again, but only if the process doesn’t leave you buried in dust for days afterward. Minimizing dust during interior painting projects is one of those things that separates a truly professional job from one that just looks good on the surface.

Prep Work Sets the Tone

The most dust-intensive phase of any interior painting project is surface preparation. Sanding walls, ceilings, and trim generates fine airborne particles that settle everywhere: on furniture, flooring, and HVAC vents. Getting ahead of this early protects your home and keeps the rest of the project clean.

Proper Masking Matters More Than People Think

Thorough masking does more than protect your trim and floors from paint. When done carefully, it also contains sanding dust within the work area. We use masking film and tape to seal off doorways, cover floor surfaces, and protect furniture, creating a contained zone that keeps fine particles from migrating through the rest of your home.

Dustless Sanding Equipment

This is where we see the biggest difference for homeowners. Dustless sanding systems connect directly to a vacuum with a HEPA filter, capturing the vast majority of dust at the source rather than letting it become airborne. Compared to conventional sanding, the improvement in air quality and cleanup time is significant. We use dustless sanding equipment because we care about what your home feels like to live in after we leave, not just what it looks like.

Ventilation and Air Management

Even with dustless equipment and solid masking, some airborne particles are inevitable. Managing airflow helps contain them:

  • Keep doors to unaffected rooms closed throughout the sanding phase
  • Avoid running your HVAC system while sanding to prevent particles from circulating through ductwork
  • Use box fans positioned to direct air outward through a window rather than into the living space
  • Change or cover HVAC filters before work begins if the system needs to run

Choosing the Right Products

Paint and primer selection also play a role. Low-VOC and zero-VOC formulas have improved dramatically, and many professional-grade products now offer better flow and adhesion with less surface prep required. Fewer sanding passes means less dust generated overall.

Should you strip old paint or paint over it?

The Cleanup Phase

Even when dust is well-managed throughout the project, a thorough clean before painting begins is worth the time. Wiping down sanded surfaces with a tack cloth removes residual particles that could otherwise show up in the finished coat, which means less touch-up work and a smoother result you’ll actually notice.

When a painting project is done right, you shouldn’t spend the following week cleaning up after it. At Dunbar Painting, minimizing disruption to your home is part of how we work, because the goal is for you to enjoy your refreshed space, not recover from the process.
