Completing Your Project

Step One: Contact & Meeting

Whether you phone our answering service or contact us through our website, you will receive a prompt reply to discuss your painting needs and schedule an estimate. Some jobs can be quoted from pictures while others require in-person meetings.

During an onsite estimate, we will discuss the scope of work, your needs and expectations, and any other important details to ensure we can deliver the solution you want.

Step Two: Quote & Scheduling Work

Once we have understood your project from top to bottom, we will promptly email you a detailed project quote. In most cases, you can expect to have a detailed quote within 24 hours. This quote outlines the work we will perform, how much it will cost, and our warranty terms. Once you accept this quote, you will then be added to our production schedule and will be informed of when we will arrive.

Cleaning and Preparation

Dustless Sanding (If Required)

Exterior Painting

Step One: Cleaning and Surface Preparation

Standard cleaning includes washing surfaces that are being painted, either with soft wash or by hand.

Surface preparation includes sanding failing paint until the edges are no longer peeling, scuff sanding shiny surfaces, caulking gaps where moisture can get in, and priming bare wood. Our team can also perform specialty preparation tasks like glazing windows, aesthetic sanding to make old wood look newer, and Bondo repairs.

We can also perform more extensive repairs, if needed, such as bringing in our carpenters to quote and fix sections of rooted wood.

Step Two: Dustless Sanding

We use dustless sanding whenever possible, especially around open windows and doors, or when we need to strip a surface. If your project does not require dustless sanding, we will only need to perform our standard cleaning and other preparation, allowing us to proceed with the painting portion of the work sooner.

Step Three: Exterior Painting

Once the outside of your house has been prepared to Dunbar Painting standards, we will start with applying the paint, using only the best products and proper application techniques. All jobs are done with either high-quality Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams products.

Dunbar Painting is one of a handful of painting companies approved by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation (VHF) and has painted several homes as a part of the True Colours Grant from the VHF. When you choose our professional painters, you are choosing a team that knows what it takes to rejuvenate your older living space or heritage home.

Cleaning and Preparation

Dustless Sanding

Minor Repairs

Interior Painting

Step One: Cleaning and Surface Preparation

As part of our basic cleaning and surface preparation, our team will move furniture, mask (as needed), degrease dirty and shiny areas, scuff sand shiny areas, repair wall damage, caulk trim, and scuff sand walls. We do, however, request that any smaller belongings be removed from the room before we arrive.

Step Two: Dustless Sanding

Our industry-leading dustless sanding system vacuums dust, paint particulate, and lead particles through a HEPA filter to keep your home clean and safe. We include dustless sanding at no extra cost in every quote, ensuring optimal cleanliness without increasing the price of your project.

Step Three: Minor Repairs

In addition to our basic surface prep, our team can also provide more extensive surface preparation including performing Bondo repairs to doors, installing drywall, taping, and mudding, and providing carpentry work, such as new trim or replacement moldings.

Step Four: Interior Painting

Once all preparation and repairs are complete, we start to paint with brushes, rollers, or sprayers as required for your project. We only use high-quality painting equipment and premium Benajmin Moore or Sherwin-Williams products, applying the required amount of paint for your project.

Staining Process.

Sanding, Stripping, and Other Prep

Applying Stain

Step One: Natural Wood Surface Preparation

First, we clean the surface of the wood by removing any mildew or dirt on exterior wood or by degreasing interior wood. Next, our team will use their extensive knowledgebase to decide on the best approach given the desired result and the current condition of the wood being stained. The approach we take could include stripping, conditioning, staining, and clear coating or could be as simple as just clear coating, or anything in between.

Step Two: Applying Stain

The application strategy we use for applying stain on the natural wood surfaces around your home will depend on the prep work, surface type, and the type of stain being applied. We usually use Sansin products, but we have other products we can use where Sansin is not the right fit. Stains and clear coats are often applied by brush, roller, or spray, depending on the situation.
